Educator Slain and 25 Female Students Kidnapped in Firefight at School in Nigeria

Armed conflict at school
Educational institutions in the northern part of Nigeria have repeatedly come under attack for militant organizations

Weapon-carrying attackers have killed a teacher and kidnapped no fewer than 25 pupils in an assault against a educational institution for young women in north-western Nigeria, authorities have confirmed.

The criminal group breached the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State at roughly 4 in the morning local time on the beginning of the work week, authorities reported.

The armed individuals "engaged police personnel on duty in a gun duel" before scaling the perimeter fence and taking the pupils captive from their hostel, authorities disclosed.

One member of staff was fatally shot while defending the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now being treated medically.

Eyewitnesses described a large group of attackers, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who appeared discharging weapons intermittently to cause panic.

Area inhabitants told reporters that the attackers afterwards forced a group of female students into nearby bushland.

The law enforcement confirmed they had positioned "supplementary tactical squads, alongside military personnel and community security teams" to the area.

A coordinated search and rescue operation is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and suspected escape routes.

In the last several years, schools in northern Nigeria have regularly come under attack for militant organizations, who frequently execute kidnappings to demand financial compensation or leverage deals with the government.

The assault in Kebbi State underscores the continuing safety emergency troubling the locality, leaving families in Maga in a state of fearful exhaustion as they expect and desire their young ones' unharmed reappearance.

Security crisis in Nigeria's northern territories has escalated dramatically in recent months, with educational institutions experiencing the greatest impact of the unrest.
